Laser applications in materials processing

TRUMPF offers expertise with portfolio of laser products

Ditzingen, January 7, 2008 – The enormous variation in the use of light as a tool in materials processing is the focal point of TRUMPF’s exhibit at the LASYS trade show in Stuttgart. As the world market leader for laser technology, the German company has embraced the unique focus of this new trade show on laser systems for highly varying applications. “The user’s initial attention is focused exclusively on what the laser can do for the workpiece and how it performs its task,” emphasizes Jens Bleher, managing director of TRUMPF Laser- und Systemtechnik GmbH. “Secondarily, the user’s interest turns to the laser beam source that is behind the solution.”

This is why TRUMPF will be exhibiting system solutions for a multitude of laser applications at LASYS. The thick section welding of steel using the TruLaser Cell 3010 and the precision welding of stainless steel tubes (TruLaser Station 5010) are only a small part of the application range on display, which also includes the robotic welding of automotive body components (TruLaser Robot 5020) and the cutting of diverse metals of varying thicknesses (TruLaser 5030). TRUMPF will also offer the perfect system solutions for engraving and marking the most diverse materials, and machines representing the diverse applications for laser marking from the TruMark series will be exhibited, as will 2D and 3D laser systems.

Trade show highlights will include multi-axis systems and a disk laser. The chief attraction at LASYS will be TRUMPF’s LASERNETWORK, which helps to intelligently distribute the output of the new TruDisk 8002 to both the TruLaser Robot 5020 and the TruLaser Cell 3010. As a solid state laser, the brilliant TruDisk 8002 is one of the latest product developments from TRUMPF. The disk laser has a laser power output of 8 kilowatts.

The modularly designed robot processing cell, the TruLaser Robot 5020, provides one-stop shopping for all your needs – from the laser beam source, to the protective enclosure and peripheral equipment. The complete solution for 3D processing is designed for welding and therefore, perfectly continues the sheet metal processing chain. Together with TRUMPF solid-state lasers from the TruDisk or HL series, the robot processing cell can be used for deposition welding or laser cutting. The magnetic coupling on the processing head makes it easy (and repeatable) to switch between processes and simultaneously offers collision protection.

The TruLaser Cell 3010 is available with up to five axes and is perfect for processing large components, and can be used in job shops and development labs. The laser system cuts, welds and drills sample parts and prototypes precisely and economically in small and medium-sized batches.

In addition, TRUMPF will be exhibiting the TruLaser 5030 as a high performance system for all two-dimensional cutting tasks. Its single cutting head strategy reduces retrofitting times and error sources and makes it possible to process any material and material thickness without changing the head.

The road to customer application

Just as the laser’s range of applications is universal, the road to using it in integrated application solutions is highly individual. The task as a whole and its associated criteria, starting from the workpiece to be processed, including material thickness, accuracy, batch size, the wide variety of machine models, repeatability and material flow mean that customized configurations can only be put together after in-depth discussions with the customer.

TRUMPF’s laser applications centers are a means of lighting the way towards individual solutions using TRUMPF laser systems. Their purpose is to develop robust application solutions for the customer’s specific task. Equipped with TRUMPF’s complete line of laser technology and managed by highly qualified experts, TRUMPF’s laser applications centers work using an integrated approach. The range of tasks includes suitable laser configuration, process development, compiling technology tables and new tooling concepts, as well as the necessary process components. Besides its own expertise, TRUMPF relies on its cooperation with integrators – experts who, as special machine manufacturers, meet the needs of the most varying industry segments.
